Here are some things you should know

The Very Rev Ken Gray
Make sure you come to church this Sunday to welcome Ken Gray our new Dean!
GETTING TO KNOW DEAN KEN -
As a person who has lived with Albinism since birth Ken experiences both challenges and opportunities. On the challenge side, he has difficulty recognizing folks, even those he has just met, out of context. So if you meet him at the grocery store it is very helpful to say “Hi, I’m Claire, your office administrator . . .” On the delight side you may enjoy his photography which can be viewed at http://grayintheforest.smugmug.com/
His photographic motto is “We see what others miss.” Enjoy.

Week 4
Monday August 1 to Saturday August 6

“Come, Follow Me!”
With Sister Sue Elwyn
We know from the Gospels that Jesus spent as much time in prayer as in ministry; indeed, it seems the times he spent alone communing with God gave him the strength and inspiration to carry out that ministry.
In a world and a church increasingly focused on doing, it’s important for us to remember that intimacy needs times of silent communion as well.
Contemplative prayer provides us with the path the follow Jesus into the stillness of God’s presence.
Over the week, we will investigate methods of praying with the written word, with the imagination, with movement and the body, and in silence.
Each day will include an introduction to three different prayer methods, an opportunity to practice each method within the group, and some time to reflect on the experience.
When we follow Jesus into God’s silence, we can follow him into the world with renewed strength and vision
Course fee: $260 (short week)

THE CLIMATE IS NOW: Climate Science and Christian Wellness
with Ken Gray and Geoff Strong
Pope Francis, Anglican bishops, Naomi Klein and, increasingly, the shopkeeper, musician and indigenous elder all agree that more than ever we must prepare for a new world with a greatly changed climate.
We must do all we can to mitigate the effects of fossil fuel emissions and adapt our economic and environmental practices, right now!
In this two-tiered course we will develop and share answers to three questions: What in the world is going on? Why is it happening? What in the world can individuals do about it right now!
We will explore climate change and environmental justice from perspectives of both science and scripture as a prelude to action.
We will then share resources and strategies for speech and action in parishes, dioceses and communities. For this special symposium we aim to gather lay and clergy leaders, whether experienced or new, to climate justice advocacy and creation care.
Come prepared to learn, to laugh, to struggle, and to find hope in what will be a very special community.
Course fee: $260

Week 3

The Politics of the Open-Hearted:
Climate Change and Courage
with Mardi Tindal and Dan Hines
Mardi Tindal and Dan Hines will host an exploration of politics and possibility, heartbreak and hope, grief, faith and courage in a time of global warming and climate change.
Our ‘blessed unrest’ includes informed, soulful and loving resistance to society and politics as it is. When our hearts break open, worthy questions arise for a better world: What is our personal healing work within the larger communal effort? How will we sustain our activism and together build community?
We will focus on interlocking habits of the heart: deeply invigorating patterns of receiving, interpreting, and responding with hope, in light of our experience. These habits involve our intellects, emotions, self-images, and concepts of meaning and purpose.
We will engage in dialogues focused on evocative texts and questions, experience silence, solitude and journaling for reflection, and tell stories from our own lives. These practices - and habits of the heart - are informed by the work of Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage and Renewal.
Course fee: $310
