Parish Update: August 31, 2015

Hello St. Paul’s Family

I have returned refreshed and relaxed! Thank you to all the people who took such good care of the office and the building in my absence. Thank you to the Altar Guild kept my plants alive (well 2 out of 3 of them) and the Warderns – Verna Albright and Alison McKinnon as well as The Rev Sandra Sugden who not only cleaned up and organized the office – they were the friendly face of soup hand out as well! A round of applause for them!!!!!!

Welcome to The Rev Canon David Sinclair!

Canon David Sinclair will join the leadership team early in September and share in ministry until near Christmas.  Canon Sinclair comes from the Diocese of Montreal, were he retired and has continued to serve as an interim priest in a variety of parishes.
Canon David W. Sinclair has served in Parish Ministry in three Dioceses, Ontario, Niagara and Montreal.

A graduate of Queen's University (Hon. B.A. History 1959) Wycliffe College (B.Th.1962) and Toronto School of Theology (D.Min.1991), David was ordained both deacon(1961) and priest(1962) in Ontario Diocese. A Canon of St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, David retired from the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene, Picton, Ontario  in 2004. After training with the Interim Ministry Network David has served the past 11 years in a number of Intentional Interim ministries in the Diocese of Montreal.

David is married to the Rev. Georgia Copland, a minister of United Church of Canada, now also retired. Their home in Ste. Anne des Lacs, Quebec, (in the Laurentians north of Montreal) is often busy with visits from children (David 2), (Georgia 4) and a total of 12 grandchildren.

We are looking for a car for him to use while he is here, if anyone has a second vehicle for David use, please be in touch with the Bishop.

A Walk Across Spain: On Friday, September 18th, at 6:30 pm, Mount Paul United Church will host a fundraising dinner of traditional Spanish foods, after which Rev LeAnn Blackert will share stories and photos from her recent pilgrimage on the Via de la Plata and Camino Frances. The Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops are excited to announce they are participating in the Hudson's Bay Giving Day on Thursday, September 17th! They are selling tickets for $5 at their office, and with a ticket you will receive 15 - 20% off everything in the store, including sale & clearance items! (Some exceptions apply.) All proceeds from their ticket sales will be donated back to the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops! Note: The Boys and Girls Club was our outreach focus in May and you may choose to continue your support in this way or other agencies that are involved in this campaign.

Summer cleaning? Save your garage sale treasures for the fundraising committee!
There will be a garage sale on September 26 and we need your gently used stuff!
(no large furniture please)
Fund Raising 2015 Committee
 (Elaine Parkes, Jim Edwards, Duncan Macrae, Jim & Diane Freathy)

When the chapel refurbishment and sound system projects were done, the money to pay for them was borrowed from the St. Paul’s trust funds on the understanding that these funds would be replaced.  Administration and Finance has tasked this committee to raise $50,000 to cover the costs of these projects as well as supplementing the sound system with a “hard of hearing” component.  The committee has met and planned the following events for the fall:

          Sept 13th Campaign kick-off 
Sept 26th (Saturday) Garage Sale/Flea Market – in St. Paul’s parish hall from 9 am – 2 pm.  Please start collecting treasures you no longer need and maybe someone else could use.  (Please no clothing - it can be taken to the Thrift Shop.)  Collect them in a box and store them at home.  We will advise you in the fall as to when they are to be brought to the church.  It will be a time to share treasures with each other, visit and raise some money for the church.
          Oct 18th – Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction.  Sunday at 5 pm.  More details to follow.

There is no need to wait for one of these events to make a donation to the fund raising campaign.  Make your donation now.  Make your cheque payable to St. Paul’s Cathedral and in the memo line make a notation “Fund Raising”.

Exploring the Natural world 
With Catherine Nicholls 
Using the natural world as our source of inspiration we will experiment on fabric to re-create and interpret nature’s wide range of textures and colours.
We will explore the use of ink, paint, dye painting and discharge in a variety of techniques creating samples and generating ideas.
Students will then be guided through the process of developing their own original composition, pattern and fibre art masterpiece.

CATHERINE NICHOLLS is a painter, writer, teacher and quilt maker. Her work is developed through drawing, painting and mixed media in sketchbooks and when working with textile involves discharge, dyeing, drawing, painting and printing- along with more traditional techniques. The textile pieces are then densely quilted either by hand or machine and often both.
Catherine is a qualified City and Guilds tutor at Diploma level in Patchwork and Quilting and Creative Sketchbooks. Her textile work travels internationally and she is a published author. She is thrilled to endorse Mettler threads.

Registration: Course Fee: $584.90 includes instruction, meals Monday supper through Friday breakfast, and accommodation based on double occupancy.
Course Only: $300.00 includes instruction, snacks and tax.
This course begins with a Trunk Show on Monday night and course instruction from 9:30am-5:30pm from Tuesday to Thursday.
