Public Invitation Notice | Refugee Sponsorship Information Meeting
About RAFT- Refugees and Friends Together
A refugee resettlement group began in the 1970’s through a collaborative effort of churches in Kamloops sponsoring families from Viet Nam, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Croatia and Bosnia. In the late 1990’s, in  order to respond to the need to sponsor refugees from Kosovo it evolved into  a community refugee sponsoring group called RAFT- which stands for Refugees And Friends Together. In the following years we sponsored families from Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Colombia, Iraq and Iran.
We have noticed over the past decade that while the number of refugees in the world has increased so have the many challenges and frustrating delays in refugee sponsorship in Canada. This is making it extremely hard for most of us to continue to sponsor refugees.
In light of the wide attention on the horrific refugee situation, we need community involvement to join in the support of refugee sponsorship with us in Kamloops.
To that end we are holding a refugee sponsorship information meeting to inform the public and recruit supporters.
Here are the details:
When: Tuesday, September 29th, 2015 at 7:00pm
Where: Kamloops United Church 421 St. Paul Street
For more information visit: www.kamloopsunited.ca or call: 778.471.7631

Thank you!
A quick note of thanks to the “floor waxing team” made up of Ken Munro, Dwight Oatway, Jim Edwards, Reid Albright and Ron Sugiyama. They worked hard buffing and waxing the church floors. They look great guys! Good job and thank you!

Deepening the Relationship with the Child:
Godly Play as a Spiritual Practice and Tool of Renewal
with Anne Clark and Ruth Lumax

.Godly Play transformed our congregation. The children came, bringing their families with them. Children began speaking aloud of their understanding of God. What they taught me transformed my “teaching.” Godly Play is not a Sunday school curriculum, it is a way of life.”
This course is the second part of an accreditation process for Godly Play storytellers and door people. Participants must have taken 8 hours of training in an Introduction to Godly Play.
You will experience the fun of Godly Play as both leader and learner, analyzing and preparing stories from various genres with peers in a collegial, non-judgmental setting. You will tell a story learned by heart; strengthen your classroom management skills and refine your understanding of the Godly Play environment. You will deepen your understanding of the spirituality of children and reconnect with the glorious, playful wisdom of the child within you as you experience the joy of God’s presence.
All learning will take place in a prayerful, playful atmosphere with creative and experienced Godly Play trainers. Participants who successfully complete this training will have completed their Certificate of Accreditation from Godly Play Canada.

ANNE CLARK is a certified Godly Play teacher (2006) and trainer (2008). She is passionate about holding sacred space for the work that children and God are doing together and about introducing Godly Play to those in our churches entrusted with the care of children.

RUTH LUMAX from wondering to leading and always wondering, Ruth enters the Godly Play circle as both practitioner (2006), Trainer (2011) and someone who is passionate about our biblical story. Ruth is committed to building the circle strong enough to do the work we need to do! She invites you to come close to God through wondering, silence and playful story.

Registration
  • Course Fee: $466.60 includes instruction, meals (Tuesday lunch to Thursday lunch) and accommodation based on double occupancy.
  • A $20 accreditation fee for Godly Play Trainers of BC is payable at the first class.

Giving Day at the Bay is a national campaign that honours volunteering and donating in communities across Canada.  Each year, the Bay chooses ONE major partner.  Other charitable agencies join in the campaign. Last year, the Bay donated over $50,000 to Breast Cancer research as a result of Giving Day.

This year, the Bay's major partner is Boys and Girls Club of Canada.  Besides Kamloops Boys and Girls Club (who St Paul's donated to in May 2015 as part of the Outreach Focus), seven other agencies in Kamloops have signed on to be a part of Giving Day - SPCA, Kamloops Immigrant Services, Big Brother Big Sister, Juvenile Diabetes, RIH Sun Fund, Kappa Beta Gamma Sorority and Kamloops Hospice Society..

If you want to be a part of Giving Day:
1) Go to the office of the agency of your choice. Ie the Boys and Girls Club
2) Purchase a $5 ticket.  Your $5 stays with the agency as your donation to them.
3) Take your ticket to the Bay on September 17 to receive savings on your purchases. Some restrictions may apply.

Exploring the Natural world
With Catherine Nicholls

Using the natural world as our source of inspiration we will experiment on fabric to re-create and interpret nature’s wide range of textures and colours.
We will explore the use of ink, paint, dye painting and discharge in a variety of techniques creating samples and generating ideas.
Students will then be guided through the process of developing their own original composition, pattern and fibre art masterpiece.

CATHERINE NICHOLLS is a painter, writer, teacher and quilt maker. Her work is developed through drawing, painting and mixed media in sketchbooks and when working with textile involves discharge, dyeing, drawing, painting and printing- along with more traditional techniques. The textile pieces are then densely quilted either by hand or machine and often both.
Catherine is a qualified City and Guilds tutor at Diploma level in Patchwork and Quilting and Creative Sketchbooks. Her textile work travels internationally and she is a published author. She is thrilled to endorse Mettler threads.

Registration: Course Fee: $584.90 includes instruction, meals Monday supper through Friday breakfast, and accommodation based on double occupancy.
Course Only: $300.00 includes instruction, snacks and tax.
This course begins with a Trunk Show on Monday night and course instruction from 9:30am-5:30pm from Tuesday to Thursday.
