Lady Wisdom: the Feminine Face of the Divine

Lecturer:  Dr. Patricia Dutcher-Walls

Does not wisdom call,
and does not understanding raise her voice?
“To you, O people, I call,
Hear, for I will speak noble things,
and from my lips will come what is right.
Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold;
for wisdom is better than jewels.
I love those who love me,
and those who seek me diligently find me.”
Proverbs 8

The wisdom traditions of ancient Israel contain a sustained and repeated representation of Lady Wisdom, a feminine image of God’s interactions with humanity. References to this feminine image start in the early wisdom writings as a metaphor of wisdom calling humanity to learn. Later, the image develops into a full-blown personification of Wisdom as a female emanation of God. We’ll trace this image through the ages in the world of ancient Israel and listen for the playfulness associated with the Lady Wisdom. Participants will have a chance to read and understand some of the wisdom texts that develop this idea.
