Parish Update: August 31, 2015

Hello St. Paul’s Family

I have returned refreshed and relaxed! Thank you to all the people who took such good care of the office and the building in my absence. Thank you to the Altar Guild kept my plants alive (well 2 out of 3 of them) and the Warderns – Verna Albright and Alison McKinnon as well as The Rev Sandra Sugden who not only cleaned up and organized the office – they were the friendly face of soup hand out as well! A round of applause for them!!!!!!

Here are a few things you may need to know.

Welcome to The Rev Canon David Sinclair!

Canon David Sinclair will join the leadership team early in September and share in ministry until near Christmas.  Canon Sinclair comes from the Diocese of Montreal, were he retired and has continued to serve as an interim priest in a variety of parishes.
Canon David W. Sinclair has served in Parish Ministry in three Dioceses, Ontario, Niagara and Montreal.

A graduate of Queen's University (Hon. B.A. History 1959) Wycliffe College (B.Th.1962) and Toronto School of Theology (D.Min.1991), David was ordained both deacon(1961) and priest(1962) in Ontario Diocese. A Canon of St. George's Cathedral, Kingston, David retired from the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene, Picton, Ontario  in 2004. After training with the Interim Ministry Network David has served the past 11 years in a number of Intentional Interim ministries in the Diocese of Montreal.

Fund Raising 2015 Committee
(Elaine Parkes, Jim Edwards, Duncan Macrae, Jim & Diane Freathy)

When the chapel refurbishment and sound system projects were done, the money to pay for them was borrowed from the St. Paul’s trust funds on the understanding that these funds would be replaced.  Administration and Finance has tasked this committee to raise $50,000 to cover the costs of these projects as well as supplementing the sound system with a “hard of hearing” component.  The committee has met and planned the following events for the fall:

          Sept 13th Campaign kick-off
Sept 26th (Saturday) Garage Sale/Flea Market – in St. Paul’s parish hall from 9 am – 2 pm.  Please start collecting treasures you no longer need and maybe someone else could use.  (Please no clothing - it can be taken to the Thrift Shop.)  Collect them in a box and store them at home.  We will advise you in the fall as to when they are to be brought to the church.  It will be a time to share treasures with each other, visit and raise some money for the church.
Oct 18th – Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction.  Sunday at 5 pm.  More details to follow.

There is no need to wait for one of these events to make a donation to the fund raising campaign.  Make your donation now.  Make your cheque payable to St. Paul’s Cathedral and in the memo line make a notation “Fund Raising”.

Would you like to help with one of these events?  If so please contact Elaine Parkes at 250-374-2316 or elaineparkes05@shaw.ca

Exploring the Natural world
With Catherine Nicholls
Using the natural world as our source of inspiration we will experiment on fabric to re-create and interpret nature’s wide range of textures and colours.
We will explore the use of ink, paint, dye painting and discharge in a variety of techniques creating samples and generating ideas.
Students will then be guided through the process of developing their own original composition, pattern and fibre art masterpiece.

CATHERINE NICHOLLS is a painter, writer, teacher and quilt maker. Her work is developed through drawing, painting and mixed media in sketchbooks and when working with textile involves discharge, dyeing, drawing, painting and printing- along with more traditional techniques. The textile pieces are then densely quilted either by hand or machine and often both.
Catherine is a qualified City and Guilds tutor at Diploma level in Patchwork and Quilting and Creative Sketchbooks. Her textile work travels internationally and she is a published author. She is thrilled to endorse Mettler threads.

Thrift Shop
After 25++ years Shirley Lowe and Ella Beckett are retiring from the Thrift store. We are so grateful for their many many years of service and hard work.
We need to find some new recruits/volunteers to help fill the hole they have left.
Can you spend a couple of hours a week sorting, pricing, selling and generally having a lot of fun? These ladies LOVE to laugh and have lots of fun with each other.
Shifts for sorting and pricing are normally Thursdayand the Thrift store is open on Friday from 9:30 – 1:30.
They are closed for the summer so there is no summer commitment!
Hours do vary though……
If you are interested and think you can help out or want more information please contact Elaine Neen – 250-852-3852 or Elaine Parkes 250-374-2316.

July 5-11 – Week 1
Indigo and Stitch: Patterned Scarves
With Thomas Roach

Description
Come explore a week of guided meditative stitching that will result in two scarves, one in cotton and indigo, and one in silk with another natural dye.
You will be encouraged to let your hands and mind work together intuitively – every stitch becoming a prayer. In the dyepot, your simple stitches will be transformed into remarkable visual texture and pattern.
The intentions that you hold in your heart and mind will be imbued in the finished cloth. Consider keeping one scarf and gifting the other to a friend or loved one – one whom you have kept in mind throughout the process.
Together we will reflect on the beauty, practicality and spiritual dimensions of scarves. All stitching is based on simple running stitches so that you need not have any previous experience with sewing or dyeing.
· Course Fee: $310 (and a $25 supply fee)

The Jesus Way – Building Community one Conversation at a Timewith Ivy Thomas and LeAnn Blackert
SPOILER ALERT!!! You will recognize these instructors from their Lenten Lecture presentations!!

Description
Jesus, the Great Communicator, practiced a Circle style of conversation: sitting around a fire sharing food and fellowship with his disciples, entering a circle ready to throw stones to defuse an unjust condemnation, sharing God’s Way with others one conversation at a time. Being in community is an inevitable part of living.
Research has shown that for a group to function well the following basic needs must be met: Safety, Cooperation, Understanding, Creativity and Achievement.
The Circle Way offers a practical style of communication that nurtures each of these aspects, enabling the development of deep, honest relationships. Within the safety of the Circle, voices are heard, ideas are shared and creativity is unleashed.
Ivy and LeAnn have translated important principles and practices of The Circle Way to improve the conversations we have at home, at work and in the church.
Join us to learn how Circle conversations can enhance personal relationships, committee meetings and congregational gathering
