February 4th, the St. Paul's Men once again prepare a delicious dinner. This year the theme will be the 1950's. So break out those saddle oxfords; poodle skirts. Roll that pack of smokes into your t-shirt sleeve, and come prepared to eat while enjoying fine fellowship and fun music. Tickets are: $12/adult; $5/child; $30/family and are available in the office.

HAVE A BLESSED 2012

St. Paul's Cathedral has returned to regular office hours and service times for the coming year. Our many hard working volunteers entertained and educated our parish in various ways over the holidays.

Beginning with a pageant at 4 pm, Christmas Eve, which was composed by the Sunday School children and directed by a parishioner. Working with the Sunday School teachers, she pulled together a lively group of young people to present the Nativity Story in their own words. The 7 & 11 pm Candlelight services were well attended. Those who attended were grateful for the quiet, reflective time in an otherwise hectic season.

Lessons & Carols greeted the New Year on January lst. It was lovely to sing those beloved carols one more time before the final farewell to Christmas 2011, and in welcome to the new year.

Busy volunteers worked behind the scenes to ensure anyone in need of pastoral care was tended to. The Shelter was open Christmas Day and New Year's Eve with a host of dedicated volunteers working hard to give the neighbours a warm place with fellowship and some food.

Thank you to all who make our Church Home a welcoming, warm, hospitable place.

ALL SAINTS, ALL "SOLES"

To celebrate All Saints Day November 6th, St. Paul's is asking for donations of NEW shoes or walking boots for men and women who gather in the Out of the Cold Shelter held in our basement. Bring the shoes and boots to the Sunday morning service ON NOVEMBER 6TH, please.

The Shelter re-opens for the winter on November 6th and runs Sunday/Wednesday nights. It also opens when the temperature drops below -10C. Guests are given a warm place to sleep overnight and food. St. Vincent de Paul organizes the volunteer team. If you can volunteer time and/or money for this initiative, please call Ron at 250-554-0098

REMEMBRANCE DINNER

Oh those industrious Sunday School class participants! Under the supervision of coordinator Nancy, the class filled 75 containers with turkey/chicken/vegetable/noodle soup to share with our neighbours in need. A hearty meal packed with loving care and much enthusiasm. This evidence of selfless giving on the part of our next leaders gives this old adult much hope! Well done faithful servants.

Summer holidays are over, and the Cathedral is preparing to celebrate the season of Harvest. Upcoming events during this period are:

Starting September 27th for 10 weeks Experiencing Jesus, with Barb Paterson as the faciliator. Participants need a copy of Jesus, Uncovering the Life, Teachings and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary by Marcus Borg. There will be a course handbook available for $8.

Saturday, October 1st, St. Paul's will host a Harvest Dinner at 5:30 pm. Call the office for tickets or registration.

SUNDAY SCHOOL & YOUTH GROUP

St. Paul's Cathedral has been soooo quiet, and we welcome the return of our vibrant congregation. A big part of that vibrancy is the return of our young people.

Sunday School will resume September 18th, with registration before the class. We welcome all little people to our classes.

PWRDF APPEAL

You will have heard by now that the Canadian Government is matching donations made to the famine in East Africa:
For every dollar an individual Canadian donates over a 10-week period (retroactive to July 6, 2011, and ending September 16, 2011) to an eligible registered Canadian charity responding to the drought in East Africa, the Government will contribute an equivalent amount to the East Africa Drought Relief Fund. The Government of Canada will administer the relief fund separately, disbursing funds to organizations best suited to make an effective and real difference in the lives of people affected by the drought.

Donations may be receipted by the parish and funds forwarded directly to PWRDF, clearly identified East Africa Drought Relief. As CIDA is requesting weekly updates of funds raised, please forward collections as frequently as possible.

It is our privilege to serve God’s people in their time of need. Thank you for your help and support during past crises. For the additional workload that this appeal may generate, we thank you in advance.

PWRDF Responding to the Horn of Africa Drought July 14, 2011

The worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa in six decades is currently affecting up to 10 million people. The United Nations describes the situation in the region as the most severe food security emergency in the world today, with the Famine Early Warning Systems Network warning that the response is “inadequate to prevent a further deterioration”. Levels of severe, acute malnutrition in this area, particularly among children, are also of great concern. The mix of drought, skyrocketing food prices, food shortages, and deaths of livestock in large numbers has combined to make this situation a devastating one for millions of people in the region.

PWRDF, through the ACT Alliance, is responding to this emergency. ACT is a global coalition of 111 churches and agencies engaged in development, humanitarian assistance, and advocacy. The current needs as discussed with ACT members are as follows:

Kenya: Food distribution; supplementary feeding for nutrition targeting children, the elderly and nursing mothers; and water supply are the needs during the crisis phase. Farmers will need seeds, fertilizers and livestock restocking for the recovery process.

Ethiopia: Food distribution, water supply-- including the rehabilitation of water points and water harvesting; livestock restocking, and rehabilitation of pasture and growing of future animal feed.

Somalia: The Programme Coordinator for the Somali Refugee Program who was in the Dadaab refugee camp, which hosts 370,000 people and is currently receiving about 1300 new arrivals a day, communicated on July 13, “Here, things are changing by the hour and the situation has never been this bad”.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS & BUILDING CLOSURES

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
The Office will close at 1 pm, Thursday, June 30th for the long weekend, and will re-open at 10 am Wednesday, July 6th. For that week, the office will be on shorter hours, and will be open from 10 am to noon.

The following week, beginning July 11th, the floor is being refinished and the building will be closed & sealed completely for the week. There will be no Wednesday, Holy Communion July 13th as a result. The office will re-open at 10 am, July 19th. However, the hall will remain sealed and no one is allowed into that room until July 24th.

The Voice Mail will be monitored, so leave a message with explicit details for a call back. We thank you for your patience.

SUMMER MAINTENANCE

As always, summer is slow for activities in the church, so our Maintenance crew takes this time to spruce up the building. The floors in the basement, kitchen, sacristy, and entrance to the Parish hall will be washed and waxed June 30th and therefore closed to traffic until Sunday, July 3rd.

Then a week later a major floor job will be done, requiring complete closure of the entire building from July 11 to 17th. Therefore, there will be no Wednesday Holy Communion service on July 13th.

The building will re-open to occupancy July 17th, but the Parish Hall remains sealed until July 24th. The Parish Hall floor is well used, and we want the finish to be solid. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

SPEAKING OF NEW FONT . . .

Isn't it a beautiful font. Much discussion and thought went into replacing the old font. The group wanted something lighter, and pored over volumes with a variety of models. Finally, the choice of the bowl came down to this one which was designed by Martha Sturdy Designs in Vancouver.

Then it was down to the supporting structure. St. Paul's is truly blessed with a brilliant wood worker. Using wood salvaged from furnishings no longer being used, Ivan designed and manufactured this gorgeous base.

Wouldn't it be great if we could :
- reach out to University young people with a stronger presence
- have more parties at the church like the recent Royal Wedding party
- be a welcoming face for groups such as those needing wheelchair access
- have a space for people who are traveling, such as youth groups
- continue with support to groups such as out of the cold
- provide kennel facilities to those using shelters who have pets
- get involved with groups working to provide seniors' housing
- work more with other downtown churches, and cooperate on conference and accommodation space
- work together with other groups to be more effective in social justice
- retain the chapel in whatever we do in the future. It is a safe sanctuary for small
groups
- hold Evensong, or other alternative forms of worship such as Taize, Iona, from time to time, and follow the service with a potluck supper
(We did not have time to discuss involved risks)

TABLE 2

USE SOCIAL MEDIA AND UPDATED WEB AND BLOG SPOTS.
- Develop professional quality electronic communications for St. Paul's that could include some engaging and interactive materials that would be particularly appealing to young people and young adults. They may be a vehicle to tap into and respond to spiritual questions and important issues in their lives. It could open the door for other young people to participate if complemented with face-to-face activities.
RISKS: Will require expertise and costs to develop and maintain. Some also felt that the virtual medium, though very popular, takes away the personal contact that the church has always greatly valued.
WORSHIP AT SENIORS' FACILITIES
- We presently hold small services at various Senior and Extended care facilities. It was suggested that perhaps, with the support of these facilities, we could take the whole church out on a Sunday morning to the communities that we minister to. This could happen once or twice a year to help us broaden our focus and bring the residents more fully into our worship.
RISKS: There are various logistical limitations but not really a lot of risks. Perhaps having both services but with a larger team of St. Paul's members participating would be a compromise alternative.

MINISTRY OF THEATER OF MUSIC
- The arts can bring out new people and encourage and strengthen the gifts that are already in place among our community. The Church has historically used these mediums to reach out to people beyond the church walls. Organizing and promoting a professionally managed production would provide all kinds of connection to the broader community and subject to the choice of production could be a new way to share our faith and church with the community at large and opens new doors.
RISKS: There is concern that these types of productions take huge amounts of time, energy and resources, and cause a dilution of the somewhat limited capacity within the congregation. Perhaps we can draw from people and talents beyond the congregation.

HIGH PROFILE SPEAKER
- It was suggested that if we knew of the right person(s), perhaps we could bring him/her/them to the congregation for a weekend or other event and use it as a motivational event to stir up, inspire, encourage and guide. While it was noted that this suggestion, in and of itself, is not a ministry, the commitment to bring in quality speakers and leaders to educate and inspire us is already happening to some extent.
RISKS: Some costs and some concern that speakers could have their own agendas.

DIFFERENT WORSHIP TIMES
- It was pointed out that Sunday mornings are not the best time for all people, especially young people and families. It was also pointed out that traditional music and some aspects of our service could be adapted to a more youth friendly format both in time and content.
RISKS: again we face resource problems for this in terms of separate services, leadership and music.

SENIORS HOUSING PROJECT
- Some parishes have tackled a project to sponsor and build a seniors' home or housing project, such as an Abbeyfield home. Would that be something of interest or relevance to St. Paul's as our demographic continues to age?
RISKS: Again, the ability to resource such a project is a risk. This requires several years of planning and negotiating with funding partners. It could be better to get it going, and then spin it off as a semi-autonomous society.

DAY CARE
- The provision of quality daycare continues to be a challenge for most young families. Past experiences with this at St. Paul's led to closing down the day care due to new rules and requirements. However, it does provide a vital service for young families, and with the new house next door, perhaps in time we may have facilities that could support this.
RISKS: This would likely be a service that the church could encourage and support in some way, but likely not want to operate.

This table felt that we need to be thoughtful as to what new Ministries we step into as they may divert resources and attention from other things, and there may be limits to the number of things we can be doing at the same time. However, most of the group seemed open to exploring new ministries and activities for St. Paul's. They also decided that a discussion on music would be better suited to another time.

- have a fund to provide opportunities to those who cannot afford opportunities
- provide an opportunity on a regular basis to talk over problems and get some help
- have hymns that were more energizing and contemporary; easy to sing and with contemporary words. Several people mentioned Graham Kendrick as a resource. The hymns should relate to the readings for the day.
- have the sermons published
- have a better sound system. Hearing is a problem for many people.
- arrange assistance with small jobs for seniors, perhaps provided by the youth group.
- have better acoustics in the hall
- provide more handicapped accessible washrooms and twice as many stalls for women as for men
- broadcast our services
- do more activities with St. George's
- invite other churches in APCI to the Cathedral. One table member would be willing to contribute towards expenses for this.

Comments and questions from this table: we need to attract more people and become more financially viable. Can Kamloops upkeep 2 (Anglican) churches? Would it be stronger as one? Would building a new church attract more people? If you were a new person who walked into the church, would you have stayed? We need to have a welcoming attitude.
If we are constantly balking about the music, why isn't anything happening? Do we need a committee to look into the music?

Wouldn't it be great if we could:
- have more theological education to understand what the bible says, what the liturgy and Eucharist mean, and how they have implications for how we live, based on adult education principles. Not being educated in church may make people move on.
- have a Mom's study group to support moms
- have a parish that would be a place of discernment ie a member's vocation and place in the world. We would be able to support each other in our calling. We need to tell our stories to each other.
- have book clubs
- structure decision making differently so that everyone has a stake
- have time to discuss things with each other
- address the music issue, so that it would be more uplifting and more contemporary
- give the congregation a chance to become more familiar with unfamiliar music - choir practice in church prior to service. Those wishing quiet could use the chapel.
- have lay ministers participate more visibly
- have less "us" and "them"
- host parish social justice things, such as forums
- have Taize services
- advertise activities that the public could join –ie walk the labyrinth, sing

FUTURE OF MINISTRY

All parishioners are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion. There will be a session in the fall to review the outcomes of the discussions and input from the parish.

Group 1
Hold Taize services?
Hold services on another day or night.
Is Evensong a possibility?
Let’s celebrate our resources: children, youth, families, and seniors.
Let’s focus on people rather than “stuff”.
How can we attract more people?
How can we prevent burnout of our leaders?

Group 2
The church must appeal to youth, so we will have to make major changes. In 20 years, youth will not be attending as adults. Be more flexible in what we are, and be willing to accept change. Liturgy has less appeal to young people. Use modern technology – Facebook?
Be more involved with Outreach programs in the Community.
Be more involved with other Anglican churches in our area.
Put up or shut up. We need to move forward with our building.
Aging demographics.
Music leaves a lot to be desired. It is not uplifting.

Group 3
Do we need a formal way of recognizing new people and making them feel welcome?
Name tags would help those of us who forget names.
Do we give lots of praise to those who do ministry quietly or where we don’t see it?
Encouraging personal discussions of how our faith affects our life and our life affects our faith.
More contemporizing of liturgy and music, ie the written creeds.

Group 5
Hearing in the Cathedral is difficult for some people. We need a wired sound system that would allow people to use headphones.
Tape sermons so that others may hear them.
Worship space needs to be consistent.
At worship, most of us are the same age. What is our future?
Change the music. Cursillo music would be better. We need music that makes us feel better and more uplifted. There is lovely music available. The words of many of the traditional hymns are not great and do not make much sense today.
Use more contemporary music.
Passing of the Peace at 10 AM sometimes becomes a bit of a zoo.

Group 6
Have a welcome package for visitors. Recognize visitors. Give them a personal invitation and take them to coffee.
Combine ministry displays with various functions to which community is invited.
Invite your friends and neighbors to church.
Increase amount of contemporary music. Ask young people to bring instruments to play.
Use music that we can sing – not pitched as high. Put music on a screen.
Try other ways of reconfiguration – eg in the round.
Make more use of Lay Ministers of Word and Sacrament. There could be a rotating preaching schedule.
Advertise what we do - eg Confirmation and Baptismal classes.
Invite those outside our church community to our parish events and activities, such as bible study, movies, community gardens, youth group. Make personal invitations, big color advertisments.
Vacation bible school in the summer.
We have an opportunity to increase our ministry at seniors’ residences – eg healing services.
We don’t know who in the community needs prayers, because at the prayers of the people the names in the basket are not shared.
Hold healing services at St. Paul’s.

RECONFIGURATION OF SPACE

If you are a member of St. Paul's parish, you need to be aware of potential changes:
The Cathedral’s Facility and Ministry Committee has spent the last five years exploring our shared ministry at St. Paul's, as well opportunities for our facility. The mandate has been to look at:
• what our ministry is,
• how our ministry is supported or hindered by the present facility,
• what the future might hold for our Cathedral Parish in terms of our long range plans.

Last year presentations were made to the community which outlined three options to consider for our future life together. These options were:
• to stay as we are,
• consider rebuilding,
• renovate.

A survey was taken in the spring of 2010 with the results showing a high engagement in this process, but no clear decision as a community at this time. The survey results were shared in small group discussions with the community and from this came helpful input offering direction to the Facility and Ministry Committee for their future work.

The process of the Committee’s work continues, and will involve a number of monthly after church conversations looking at our ministry together now and into the future. You will receive more information about this before our first conversation in March.

The Worship Reflection Group, a sub-committee of the Facility and Ministry Committee, has been meeting for the last two years. This group has been evaluating our present worship space, exploring other models and researching designs and liturgical concepts and needs that can be supported by the physical structure of the worship space. They have worked with resources written by Richard Giles: “Creating Uncommon Worship”, and “Re-Pitching the Tent”. From this work and that of the Facility and Ministry Group, in addition to input from the parish conversations and input from the surveys, it has been discerned that it is time that we as a community together begin to explore and experience our worship space in a new way for a limited time period.

A trial reconfiguration of the present space will assist us as a community to consider possible changes, and provide the opportunity to reflect with actual experience in the context of our worship in the Cathedral building.
Reconfiguring the liturgical space of our worship will provide several opportunities:
• education – a chance to learn more about what we do in worship and why we do what we do
• experience – a new perspective that might reveal to us differently the challenges and blessings of the space we presently share as it is now
• open us to a new understanding – of our worship as Christian Anglicans nourished by Word, Baptism and Eucharist

The Cathedral worship space (the Narthex, Nave and Sanctuary) will be reconfigured for the Liturgical Season of Lent in 2011. From the period of March 13 – April 17, we will experience different seating and liturgical furniture arrangement in the Cathedral. A detailed plan of this reconfiguration will be shared with the community in mid February, along with tools to assist us in our evaluation of the experience. The proposal is to change the entrance way, place the holy table at the east end of the building and arrange the pews differently.

The committees working on this, in partnership with the Cathedral Committee, Rector and Wardens wanted to inform the Cathedral community well in advance so that we are all able to enter into these changes prepared. We know that change is challenging, and that changes of worship space will provoke numerous responses. We want to emphasize that this is not being proposed or done in a cavalier fashion, but with the intention of providing opportunities for engaged community education, reflection, and conversation about what we do when we worship and how the space in which we do this can best support our worship of God and our growth as the community of Christ's body in this place.

Due to a death in the Dean's family, the workshop has been postponed 2 weeks and will take place December 18th 9 am to 4 pm.

Remember to sign up for this Advent Workshop being held in the Cathedral Hall on Saturday, December 18th from 9 am to 4 pm. Join us for a day of reflection, discussion and art making as we prepare for the season of annunciations and the heavenly chorus singing "Glory". Come hear bible stories about Angels, hagiography from our Christian history, and identify your guardian angel. We will spend the afternoon creating Angels from a variety of media. The workshop promises to provide a wonderful day of reflection, prayer and creativitiy in preparation for the Birth of the Christ Child. Results of the Post-Survey discussions on Sunday, Oct 31 at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

People were asked to respond to the following 3 questions.

1 What are your initial thoughts and feelings on the results of the survey?

2. What does it say to you?

3. How do you see us going forward from here?

This is what groups came up with.

TABLE 1
Continue to investigate renovating our existing building.
Where is the money going to come from?
Roof repair/ replacement will be needed in the next 5 years.
Keep the best of what we have got. What spaces can be changed?
Install a Stair Chair instead of an elevator.
Washrooms.
People who no longer drive cannot get here by public transportation on Sundays. Do we need to change the times of our services?
If the property next door can be purchased, it could be made into a 5 – 6 storey condo building with Cathedral and Synod offices in the lower level and housing above.
Start on a smaller scale to see where the community can go in time.
A lot of concern was expressed about where money would come from to do either renovations or rebuilding.

There is no clear direction because there has not been enough input from the parish.
There should have been more small group meetings like this to provide input for the committee.
It was nice to get information before the meeting so that people could preview it.
The survey does show that more people would like to see renovation rather than rebuild.
We need to choose the direction for our worship in the future.
We have an aging population and a small group of people who support the parish.
Ministry should dictate what kind of a facility we need.
With a renovation there is still a problem with parking.
With a renovation there is a huge expense to keep an old building going.
Renovations could be prioritized if there is a problem with expenses.
SUMMARY
We need to look at Ministry, worship space, vision and demographics, and have a building that reflects these.
Examine the good points of our Ministry and how we can build on them.
Provide a chart showing the demographics of the congregation.
Renovations should proceed to bring the building up to code and make it safer.
Have more small meetings or home visits to get the feeling of the congregation.
Have short meetings after the 8 AM service so that those members of the congregation can take part.
Identify areas where parishioners can see opportunities to accommodate changes. Encourage those programs that are working and identify areas where there could be improvement.
Check out Vernon, which has the fastest growing congregation in BC.

We should do more repair and renovation. Put heat pump, air conditioner and air exchange upstairs, and eliminate baseboard heaters. This would be for the long term.
We need washrooms, a fire exit and a kitchen upstairs.
People may have disliked only one feature of the options. That could have influenced the vote.
Cover the basic needs of the building, and do the things that have to be done, such as the roof and air conditioning.
Incorporate the Chapel area into the main worship area.
Change is inevitable. We have to renovate.
Don’t feel that 59% of strongly agree and agree is adequate for the whole congregation to move forward as yet.
We need a confidential survey to see what our financial situation could be,
Temporarily change the Cathedral around and see if it works.
Determine the willingness of the parish to make a definitive commitment to the future.
We see energy in the strongly agree and agree columns for the renovate option.
We should explore a worship setting that is circular, rather than rectangular, one that accompanies the BAS with its sense of community

Where are we in 25 years with each of the options? We need to have that discussion.
There is clear direction as the survey stands now - renovate.
We may need to drop the status quo and have only 2 options and decide from there.
Eliminate one of the options including property next door.
What is Ministry for us and for others, and how does it apply to these time lines.
Demographics and ministry and facility to follow.
Bring Ministry results into 2 options and how that fits into the future and viable values.
City planner and city vision have to align with our options and what that looks like.
Longer vision.
Info session on each option, with hard facts to provide context on narrower focus
Be there to meet needs that are going to be there.
Be strategic.
Get other churches involved and include them in discussion.

THOUGHTS, FEELINGS and IMPRESSIONS
Frustration was expressed at not having a clear mandate to move forward.
This is a very Anglican result, with a range of views and hard to reach consensus (perhaps too much fence-sitting).
There are very different visions and desires of what people would like to see happen.
It would have been best to toss out the Status Quo and choose between the 2 real alternatives.
F and M Committee have been very balanced and fair in moving things forward – an excellent team and good work.
The Cleopas project looked at new church and social housing and after a long process and much discussion, could not make it work. Can we learn anything from this?
In Kelowna, 12 years of ad hoc bits and pieces in a facilities project without a compelling vision has led to unsatisfactory results.
Does the current committee feel a need for new blood and renewed energy after working hard on this for 3 + years?
What is the future demographic of our congregation, other churches and the Anglican Church of Canada? How will this influence our choices, commitments and legacies for next generations?
The survey has certainly challenged us to think seriously about our purpose / mission, our ministry and what we need in the way of facilities and location to fulfill that.

MOVING FORWARD
We should consider having a professional church / facilities / ministry facilitator assist us in working through our perceived impasse to develop a clearer direction.
If we have the house next door, it will allow us to keep options open and hopefully invigor some new energy and hope of the possibilities for the future.
The “same old: won’t cut it for the future. We need to come to a common, compelling (God’s vision!) that is future and community focused.
We do need the clear vision, but before people will buy in, we need to work through some details on scope and costs as well as seriously examine the opportunities and risks (SWOT analysis?).
It sounds as if there are only 2 options, either a new building or varying degrees of renovation of the existing one.
We should approach people in the congregation with talents and gifts that the Committee could use in the next phase.
Use professional help such as a church developer, strategic planning, and finance and risk management.
We should get an update from Kamloops United Church on how it achieved consensus and the essence of its business plan.
We need to move forward with a clear, strong vision for the future, but with the proviso that we must not sacrifice our mission in the process.
Straw poll for this table: renovate, 3 new building 4. Some who support renovate could shift to new building if certain risks and uncertainties could be addressed.

People felt badly that there seemed to be an impasse and nothing was definite.
If the figures were changed to percentages, and the groups of strongly agree and agree were combined, the percentages work out to 59% and 39%.
We should investigate only renovate or new building. Status quo is not an option.

Question 2
There IS a majority for renovate over new building.

Question 3
If we buy the house next door, what will we use it for - parking, expansion or something else? Money would come from various sources including an approximately $100,000 loan, as per the November 2009 meeting that approved purchasing the house.
Where will future money come from, as the congregation is aging? The last renovation was in 1988, and included the upstairs hall, handicapped bathroom, upper kitchen and the basement.
Can we do a blend of renovation and new building? We could keep the Cathedral and Chapel and rebuild where the parish hall exists. We should maintain the nostalgic value. Is it worthwhile to renovate when we might need to do a new building in a few years?
There are questions about asbestos, wiring and plumbing that need to be addressed.
All deliberations need to be transparent, and new options brought forward. The plans may have been too elaborate and frightening.
As a first step, consider turning the Cathedral around to face east, build the second floor further into the hall, and install a people transporter and bathroom on the second floor.

OVERALL SUMMARY of TABLE 6
The group is generally in favor of a combination of renovation and rebuilding, although concern was expressed about the worth of renovating an old building.
We should look at several renovation options, which could be done in stages.
What can we do to get more young people involved? We could have more lively music – guitars, keyboard, drums, etc.
A new building might cause us to lose people, especially if we were in temporary facilities for a while.

Concerns were expressed about the ups and downs in the housing market,

OUT OF THE COLD Starting November 3rd, St. Vincent De Paul will once again be running an overnight shelter on Sunday and Wednesday nights in the basement of St. Paul's Cathedral. Additionally, any time the temperature drops below -10C it is hoped the shelter can be opened. All in need are welcome to come spend the night in a warm bed.

4th ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST

For the past 4 summers, our "Circular" newsletter team have received photo's taken by parishioners. They depicted God's wonderful world in 3 categories: People and pets; scenes; and open.

Each year the judges have been challenged to pick just one 1st place winner, and some honorable mentions. This year was no different I'm sure. The process is done blind--they don't know who submitted the photo nor the explanation behind it.

So, this year, the winner's of first place are: Tammy Davis for people and pets; Joy Gothard for scenes; and Trudy Smith for open category. Honorable mentions went to Rae Long, Bridget Jensen, Islay Oatway, and Katie Lukow took 2 H.M.'s.

Congratulations to all, and thank you for supporting the contest. It's been fun, and now the office has these beautiful submissions gracing the wall. Anytime you're in the church during office hours, be sure to pop in and take a look--the photo's are awesome!

ROOTS AMONG THE ROCKS

On July 20th, St. Paul's Cathedral hosted the amazing youth tour "Roots Among the Rocks". Here is a shot of the cast & crew with our dean, The Very Rev. Louise Peters.

Upwards of 80 people braved the heat and laughed, cried, identified (or not) with the stories collected and shared by these enthusiastic young people. Most amazing of all, is that approximately 30 days prior to appearing in Kamloops, this group had not met each other, had no material, and no plan. In that short space of time they collected stories from 70 people, wrote a play, found players, directors, and roadies. They played at the General Synod in Halifax in June, then took the production on a road trip across Canada.

It was a production to rival most anything professional, and certainly made this author ponder questions about faith and the church community.

SUMMER HOURS

The Thrift Store is closed for the summer and will re-open Sept. 10th. The Very Rev. Louise Peters will be away until July 25th, then from August 1 to 27th. The office is open as usual 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Tuesday to Friday, and staff will be happy to arrange pastoral care during the week if you have need.

Hi Gang: Our veggies may be behind Chuck's "banana-belt" garden, but they're growing as fast as they can! Chuck visited Tuesday to bolster our spirits, and he didn't mention once how much higher his peas have grown! This week Allison's grandson Tristan joined our team, and put his youthful energy and enthusiasm into hilling the potatoes and leeks, and weeding as well - thanks, Tristan. We look forward to you joining us again. Rae showered us with goodies - she does treat us well - and tried her best not to fit into the photo. Faithful June added again to
our compost, and we wonder each week how it turns to soil so quickly. We all weeded, and some of us thinned beets, and picked rhubarb, spring greens and radishes. Today Sue transplanted cabbages and kohlrabi to the last remaining free spots, and potted some up in hopes of them being adopted out - these seeds surprised us by all germinating so well.Carrying on being inspired by Jo-Lynn to dig in the dirt - what a blessing she is to us all - Sue

But not shy! A wonderful weekend of sharing and learning took place May 28 to 30th at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Centre in Cache Creek. Fourteen women from St. Paul's parish spent their time listening to Ron Rolheiser on video, discussing the Two Halves of Spiritual Life. Small break out groups shared their thoughts on the information presented. Introductions included some personal information on each of the women present, including our leader Sarah Donnelly. The food was tasty and appealing; Denise's popcorn took us through the movie "Blind Side"; rooms were clean and equipped with full bathrooms and no one had to share their room.

This morning the Kamloops Daily News did a story on our Hands in the Dirt crew as they worked in Chuck's back yard preparing this year's Community Garden.

This crew of dedicated men and women (and even babies) is one of the shining examples of love and human kindness commonly found in St. Paul's parishioners. I'm proud to call them friends.

SUPPORT FOR CREATIVE ARTS CAMPS

A young parishioner from St. Paul's has made a pledge to teach a dance to a group of children in Africa who have been orphaned through AIDS. The camps are the brainchild of Sarina Condello. She travels to Africa for 2 months every summer offering week-long creative arts camps at various orphanages. The children enjoy life at summer camp, and at the end of the week they star in a performance to which relatives and community members are invited. Using this medium, the kids have a way to communicate with each other and work together--sick or healthy, colour and gender blind.

Our young parishioner has been invited to join with Sarina as the lone volunteer. She needs to find the resources to pay for travel, accomodations & meals which she estimates will be about $5,300. She is seeking support from her community to help her participate in this worthy cause.

This morning, ably supervised by 4.5 month old Baby Lily, Mom Jenn and Granny Sue spent a couple of hours working in the dirt and got the following done:

* Edged lawn/veg. garden (running north/south) and removed +++
volunteer grass "seedlings".
* Dug and added compost & peat moss to the flower trellis and
planted 2 packets of sweet peas: Galaxy and Kiwi Bicolour Mixe.
* Weeded a bit among the raspberries and on veg. garden paths.
* Enjoyed delicious coffee and cake on the patio - the best bit!

The marigold, godetia, and red cosmos seedlings (planted April 15) started to sprout April 19 - that was quick - must be all the warm sunshine.And Sue enjoyed the first fruits of our veggie patch - clipped leek seedlings and chives - in a salad for lunch. So, we didn't get through the list of chores - they'll keep till next week!

A statement from the Primate on the disaster in Haiti

January 13, 2010 - Haiti has been devastated by a terrible earthquake. Thousands are feared to have died and many more injured. The people in Haiti have suffered so much in the past 10 years. Hurricane Jeanne ripped through the island in 2004 and in 2008 tropical storms took a huge toll. Now a new disaster. Through the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, our church has made an initial donation of $15,000 for emergency relief through Action by Churches Together (ACT).

The Anglican Church of Canada and especially the Diocese of Montreal has had a long relationship with the Anglican Church of Haiti, personalized in many respects by Canon Ogé Beauvoir, the dean of the theological seminary in Haiti. A graduate of Montreal Diocesan College, he went to Haiti in 1991 as a Volunteer in Mission. In 1996, he returned to Canada to serve as regional mission coordinator for Africa and the Middle East. He returned to Haiti, where he was born, in 2004. We are grateful to know that he and his wife Serette are safe.

Please pray for the people of Haiti as they struggle with such devastation and grief..

Please remember as well their relative in Canada and the Canadian Haitian community many of whom anxiously await news of friends, relatives and loved ones.

Please give generously to increase our support for relief efforts.

I make this appeal in the name of Christ in his compassion for all who suffer.

HAITI HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS

Primate's World Relief and Development Fund pledges support. An initial grant of $15,000 for ACT's Rapid Response Program, an ecumenical effort that is made up of churches and humanitarian organizations.

ACT members Christian Aid, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, Lutheran World Federation and Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation are already on the ground providing relief in Haiti and being funded by PWRDF and other member churches thanks to the generous donations from Anglicans in Canada.

Additional donations to Haiti relief will increase PWRDF's grant to ACT International. Donations made by individual Canadians to PWRDF over the period of January 12 to February 12, 2010 will be matched by the Government of Canada through CIDA-managed Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. We will access these funds in cooperation with other Canadian churches as we have in the past.

Please watch for updates on PWRDF's response.
For members of St. Paul's Cathedral congregation your Sunday contributions to PWRDF through the collection can be marked "Haiti relief" and we will forward all donations received. You continue to make your cheques payable to St. Paul's Cathedral, and let us know how you want that money distributed.

OUT OF THE COLD SHELTER

"Out of the Cold", an annual program to provide shelter for homeless during the cold winter weather, will be starting again November 1st. St. Paul's partners with St. Vincent de Paul to provide shelter and dinner at least 2 nights weekly--Sunday and Wednesday--and whenever the temp drops below -10C. Patrons are given breakfast before they leave for the day.

ENGAGING IN GOD'S MISSION

The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) is releasing an initial grant of $15,000 and is accepting donations to help tens of thousands of families who were affected by a devastating tropical storm that flooded 80 per cent of the Philippines' capital, Metro Manila, and its neighbouring areas.

More than 240 people have been reported killed and more than 450,000 driven from their homes after tropical storm Ketsana (locally known as "Ondoy") dumped a month's worth of rainfall in six hours on Sept. 26, said Action by Churches Together (ACT) International. ACT is a coalition of church-based groups that responds to natural disasters and humanitarian crises, of which PWRDF, the Anglican Church of Canada's relief and development arm, is a member.

There are fears that the number of victims will rise as a second tropical cyclone is forming that may affect the same areas that are still reeling from Ketsana.
